How to Create a Shortcut to a File or Folder on Android

Android does not have a built in way to put a file or folder on the home screen. If you keep opening the same PDF, ticket, or Downloads folder, a shortcut saves you a trip through the file manager every time.

Make a file shortcut

  1. Open TapOpen and tap Files.
  2. The Android file picker opens. Find the file, such as a PDF in Downloads.
  3. Select it, give the shortcut a name, and pick an icon.
  4. Add it to the home screen.

Tapping the icon opens the file in the app you normally use for that file type, like your PDF reader or gallery.

Make a folder shortcut

  1. Open TapOpen and tap Folders.
  2. Pick the folder, for example Downloads, DCIM/Camera or WhatsApp media.
  3. Name it and add it to the home screen.

The folder opens in your file manager. Which file manager depends on what is installed on your phone.

Good files and folders to shortcut

  • A boarding pass, ticket or ID card PDF.
  • Your Downloads folder.
  • A screenshots folder.
  • A study notes folder or a work document.
  • A spreadsheet you update every day.

What happens if I move or rename the file?

The shortcut points to the file where it was when you made it. If you move, rename or delete the file, the shortcut cannot find it. Make a new shortcut after moving the file.
